How to Join
St. Anthony on the Desert Episcopal Church Welcomes You!

Welcome to St. Anthony on the Desert Episcopal Church. We appreciate your interest in this Church and we are happy to answer any questions that you may have. This page is designed to acquaint you with St. Anthony on the Desert.

What Does Membership Really Mean?

(This comes from Fr. Harold Clinehen’s article originally appearing in the May, 2007 Desert Wind)

In an attempt to make membership meaningful, it has been my experience that we need to be about the business of laying the foundations that will provide a clear path for the person who comes to us with little or no previous experience with the church. We can no longer assume that people wishing membership are simply” translating” from one branch of the Christian faith to another so our goal is to provide a path intended to produce mature, active followers of Jesus. We could affectionately call this core curriculum the “3 Ms.”

We began this series with offering the first “M,” the Membership Class, in April of this year. The people completing this day of training were then welcomed as members at the New Member Service in May during our Sunday morning worship services. In October, we continued by offering another Membership Class and adding the second “M,“ a class in Spiritual Maturity. Those completing the Membership Class were then welcomed as members during the New Member Service later in October.

We now will again offer both of these classes along with the third “M.”:

Sunday, January 6, Noon-3 p.m. ~ lunch included
Membership Class: This class is the basic introductory class for anyone who wants to become a member of St. Anthony, whether they have been involved for 40 years or four days. It covers such questions as, “What is church? What is the Anglican Communion? What is the Episcopal Church? What does it mean to be a member of St. Anthony?” It’s a dynamite course that you won’t want to miss. Facilitated by Fr. Harold Clinehens.

Sunday, January 6, Noon–3 p.m. ~ lunch included
Spiritual Maturity Class: This is the second step of the core curriculum in becoming mature and active followers of Jesus. This class is designed for people who have completed the Membership Class and are ready to learn how to develop spiritual disciplines in their daily lives. Facilitated by Becky Pearson.

Sunday, January 13, Noon-3 p.m. ~ lunch included
Ministry and Mission Class. This is the third step in the series, designed to help you discover your gifts for the unique purpose for which God has created you. It's time to become an agent of blessing in the world. Facilitated by Jill Kyler.

Please contact Jill Kyler as soon as possible at jill.kyler@gmail.com or 480.451.0860 if you are interested in attending any of these three classes so that materials will be available.

Joining This Church

You may join the Episcopal Church by way of Baptism, Confirmation, or Reception. Or, if you are an Episcopalian, and a member of another Episcopal church, your membership can be transferred to St. Anthony on the Desert. We accept the baptism of all Christian Churches, and we do not "re-baptize". If you have been Confirmed in another branch of the Christian Church then you may be Received into the Episcopal Church.

Who Can Be Baptized?

In the Episcopal Church there is no age requirement for baptism. Adults, teens, and young children are regularly baptized. What is required of us at Baptism is that we renounce Satan, repent of our sins, and accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior. We baptize children and infants so that they can share membership in the Church and be benefactors of God's redemption. For further information about Baptism call the church office to make an appointment to speak with one of the clergy

Confirmation & Reception

Confirmation classes for adults (Adult Inquirers Classes) and confirmation classes for youth (Youth Confirmation Classes) are offered throughout the year. These classes are open to all who wish to be confirmed, received, or who would like to take a refresher course or learn more about the Episcopal Church. The time and location of these classes will be announced or you can call the church office.

Transferring In

If you are already a confirmed Episcopalian but would like to transfer your membership to St. Anthony on the Desert Church from another Episcopal Church, simply consult with the Rector or our Parish Secretary/Registrar and he or she will direct you in what needs to be done.

We would like to do anything we can to help you become a part of this community - both of St. Anthony on the Desert Church, and of the Episcopal Church. If there is anything we can do for you, please do not hesitate to let us know. If you have questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us via the Church Office, (480) 451-0860. We'll be happy to set aside time to spend with you.
